Combating Hate Speech in Sport

The “Combating Hate Speech in Sport” Project team met with French national partners on 8 and 9 November in Paris to discuss with stakeholders the state of play of hate speech in sport in France. Prior to France, the Council of Europe’s Sport Division worked with Spain and Grece.

This project, co-financed by the Council of Europe and the European Union and implemented by the Council of Europe Sport Division from January 2022 to December 2023, developed a four-stage strategy. The aim is to collect data, implement national strategy, exchange good practise and create an online resource centre providing access to existing tools. The implementation of the project starts in France, Greece, Spain, Germany, Montenegro and Italy.

“Sport is a great leveler that can bring people together in a way that nothing else can”

During his intervention at the 10th Commonwealth Sports Ministers’ Conference on 26 July 2022, the Council of Europe’s Deputy Secretary General, Bjørn Berge, said “Sport is a great leveler that can bring people together in a way that nothing else can”. He also recalled that the Council of Europe’s four-year strategic priorities for sport, contributes to strengthening democracy. This conference, which is held every two years, aimed to encourage cooperation on key sport policy issues within the Commonwealth.

Enhancing Sport with gender balance : EPAS event to raise awareness

EPAS is organising an online round table on the sidelines of the sixty-fifth session of the United Nations’ Commission on the Status of Women to explore the main gender gaps in different strategic fields, from sports participation to institutional representation, while discussing how public authorities and sports organisations can adopt strategies to redress inequalities.

Sports Ministers adopt resolutions to shape a better sports environment

The 16th Conference of Ministers responsible for Sport of the Council of Europe has, at its closing session on 11 February, adopted two resolutions on “A European approach to sport policies: the revision of the European Sports Charter”, and on
“Human rights in sport”

Slovenia ratifies the Convention on safety, security and service in sport

The Permanent Representation of Slovenia to the Council of Europe deposited with the Secretary General, the instrument of ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on an Integrated Safety, Security and Service Approach at Football Matches and Other Sports Events, also known as the Saint-Denis Convention.

16th Conference of Ministers comes to a close

On 11 Febraury 2021 took place the last session of the 16th Conference of Ministers. Ms Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe, Mr Niels Nygaard, EOC Acting President and Lefteris Avgenakis, Deputy Minister of Sport of Greece brought this last session of the online conference to a close.

Child safeguarding strategies in sport : see how five countries have done it

As part of the CSiS project (Child Safeguarding in Sport) co-financed by the EU and the Council of Europe, five webinars held and hold between January 13rd and February 4th, each one showcasing a system where the roles of Child Safeguarding Officers have been successfully set up in different countries.

Result of the Video conference of sport ministers, 1 December 2020

3 main topics were discussed :
– A debate on the challenges faced in organising international sporting events in different member states and on whether an increased exchange at EU level is needed.
– Approbation of the resolution for the EU Work Plan on Sport 2021 – 2024
– Briefing of ministers about the conclusions on Promoting cross-sectoral cooperation for the benefit of sport and physical activity in society.
